VG vs PG

Curious about what an e-cigarette is? Thinking of switching and need more information? Don’t be surprised if finding any concise information on the web is difficult. Unfortunately, vaping terminology can be quite confusing at first. As with many things, you have choices. Let’s look at some differences and try to simplify your decision.
The most popular and most utilized e-liquid bases are propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). All e-liquids have 4 essential ingredients: a PG or VG base, nicotine, flavorings and water. The carrier or what is commonly called the base holds the flavor and nicotine in place so your e-cigarette produces really cool looking clouds that seem like smoke vapor. The good news is that both vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol are organic and non toxic compounds and are relatively safe for consumption. They can be found in the additive lists of popular products.
Let’s start with PG-based e-liquid. Propylene glycol is quite thin in consistency so it is easily absorbed inside the cartomizer. That means no gunk build up. It is tasteless and odorless, so it doesn’t change the flavoring used. Because it is a powerful humectant, PG produces a strong throat hit, quite similar to tobacco cigarettes. On the negative side, propylene glycol can cause allergic reactions in some e-cig users.
The there is vegetable glycerin which is a thicker solution. It is slightly sweet tasting which makes the e-liquid sweeter and the flavors less discernible. It has a less of a throat hit and can cause dry mouth. On the positive side, VG e-liquids produce a lot more vapor with no allergic reactions.
The vaping community is evenly divided when it comes to e-liquid preference. Some prefer the thickness of vapor and the sweet taste of vegetable glycerin, while others enjoy the smoking-like throat hit of vaping propylene gly.
There certainly is no wrong or right. Choosing the one you prefer, is a totally personal decision and experience. See what works best for you. The good news is you have a wide range of variations to choose from. Many suggest a mixture of PB/VP. This way, you get cool clouds of vapor as well as decent throat hits.
